Don’t Forget the ACB!

without comments

Despite the fact that it’s summer, don’t forget to check out the Anonymous Confession Board, and maybe even leave a comment or start a discussion. It’s in desperate need of a redesign,  but it’s coming, don’t fret.

A few people have stopped by and left some fun remarks

Just a friendly reminder to check it out, don’t be shy.

Wiretapping now legal, thanks congress!

without comments

Thanks to a new congressional ruling, the president has essentially been given the ability to give all of the telcom companies involved in various wiretapping cases a full pardon. The best part of this is that the president doesn’t have to deal with all of the publicity that generally goes along with issuing a pardon, because this was done entirely through congress.
The ruling stipulates that each of these telcom companies will be absolved of any guilt or responsibility in their respective cases, because the president told them that it was legal for them to allow the federal government to tap their lines. This has essentially set the precedent that a company can do literally anything, as long as the president tells them that it’s OK by him.
Oh, and don’t forget the other effect of this new bill. Thanks to this ruling, the federal government will also be allowed to resume spying on our nation’s citizens, needing no warrants or court orders.

Intelligence agencies will be able to demand various communications providers hand over communications without court approval and without naming the target, so long as they claim that the communications are “reasonably believed to involve a non-American who is outside the country.” Seems rather wide open for abuse doesn’t it?

MiddBlog throws love to TrinTalk

without comments

MiddBlog never claimed to be the original. That honor goes to Wesleying (Wesleyan University’s popular blog). But occasionally our Northeast liberal-arts blog family grows just a little bigger…

Welcome to TrinTalk, Trinity College’s brand-spanking-new blog and confessional board!

A big thanks goes out to Ryan, founder of MiddBlog. He’s been a big help so far in the start of TrinTalk and the mention on MiddBlog is a big honor, especially in the first few days here. Since they called us out on it, MiddBlog has 19 Facebook fans while we have 28 - although only 18 of them are FROM Trinity. I am in MiddBlog’s 19 fans, so that brings us to 18 and 18, dead even tie. I wouldn’t push you to make us a fan though…

See the whole story here.

The first 24 hours with a real stat tracker

without comments

So, I feel obligated to let you all know, we’ve completed the first 24 hours with a real stat tracker at 12:00 a.m on Friday June 20th (today). It ended with 227 views, 73 of them being unique. What does that mean? It means that 73 different people visited the site a total of 227 times.

Some other fun stats:

  • 96% of users viewed from the United States, 4% from China (our friend Ryan from MiddBlog)
  • Of those 96%, 34% were from CT, 28% from NY, 18% from NJ, 8% from MD, and 5% from MA, with other, smaller percentages from a few other states rounding it out.
  • 49% of viewers were using Safari, 30% using Firefox, and 19% of people using Internet Explorer.

Just a few fun (for me at least) stats. Thank you so much for the support during the launch. I’d like to remind you again to fan us on Facebook, at the time of posting (1:27 a.m.) we currently have 28 fans, pretty impressive for our new little blog!

Lil Wayne and T-Pain to form supergroup

without comments

Lil Wayne confirmed today via an MTV News interview that he and T-Pain will indeed be doing an album together.

”We both have the same energy,” he said. “I don’t sleep. If you ask anybody, I don’t sleep. I think it’s the cousin of death. As much as you sleep, you’re impersonating death to me. He don’t sleep. I play all day. He plays all day and all night. The connection is crazy. He loves to be creative, he loves to work; I love to create, I love to work. He really wants people to respect his rapping; I really want people to respect my harmonizing.”

This would have hit home a bit more had T-Pain actually been a Spring Weekend performer, instead of just a rumor, but should bring celebration to Weezy F. fans out there. Anyone that’s heard “Got Money” by Lil Wayne and featuring T-Pain knows how good any collaboration between the two will be. I’m sure by the time this record comes out we’ll have heard plenty of both T-Pain and Lil Wayne on Vernon St.

“A Computer for College” Series

without comments

Our (hopefully soon-to-be) friends over at Wesleying have posted both the first and second parts of their three-part “A Computer for College” series. The guide aims to help incoming students (and returners) go through the basics of choosing a computer that is both adequate and price-appropriate.

If you’re coming to Wesleyan you’re likely getting a new computer of some kind. And if you don’t obsessively follow computer news and benchmarks you’re likely to be at least a bit out of date concerning what to get and why, so I’m going to try to help. I hope this guide can be helpful for both those coming to Wesleyan for the first time, and for those returning.

Hopefully this guide will be useful to those looking for a new computer at Camp TrinTrin.

Canadian Music Copyright Act Irks Canadian Musicians

without comments

Yet another conflict boils between musicians rights versus consumer needs. Only this time, it’s the musicians going against the copyrighters, stating that the new legislation is unfair to consumers.

“As we feared, this bill represents an American-style approach to copyright.  It’s all locks and lawsuits,”

The Canadian Music Creator’s Coalition says that this new law is unfair to those who choose to illegally download their music.  They say that it is clear that the world is changing, especially in regards to digital media.  Because of this, conventional american methods do not work to protect musical artists.  Simply suing the pants off of someone who downloads a few songs is no longer a valid solution to the problem, and passing further laws to do so is exactly the opposite of what needs to be done.

“The question is, who gains from this bill?” explained Brendan Canning, co-founder of Broken Social Scene and a CMCC member.  “It’s not musicians.  Musicians don’t need lawsuits, we don’t need DRM protection.  These aren’t the things that help us or our careers.  What we do need is a government that is willing to sit down with all the stakeholders and craft a balanced copyright policy for Canada that will not repeat the mistakes made in the United States.”

Call for Writers

without comments

Hello, hello, I’m on a mission to find a team of writers for TrinTalk. Right now the list is at two or three, and I’d like to expand to around 5 by the end of the summer, and 10 by the end of fall semester. This brings us to the first round of writer applications. Really, the process is quite simple.

I’m looking for 3 more writers, that will bring the current list to 5 (or 6 depending). I’m asking around to some friends, but am hoping that someone I randomly ask to visit the site might be interested and want a shot.

Simply fill out the form below, answering the question “Why do you want to write for TrinTalk.com?” Please be brief, I’m not looking for much, just someone that seems genuinely interested.

France punches freedom in the face, laughs

without comments

Anyone who persists in illicit downloading of music or films will be barred from broadband access under a controversial new law that makes France a pioneer in combating internet piracy.

reports Charles Bremner from the NYT.  Thanks to a new law in France, the first country in the world has passed a law enabling the government to limit a citizen’s access to the internet in response to high levels of “illegal” net activity.

In recent years, more and more wars have begun regarding the government’s place in regulation of the internet.  Battles over net-neutrality have taken the attention of many online technology blogs, and have even found their way into political campaigning.

On college campuses all around the country, a similar trend can be found, with some schools restricting their student’s internet access for times ranging from a few hours to multiple days, in an effort to crack down on repeat offenders of media piracy.
