The hope is to compile Trinity Twitter users for the purpose of quickly spreading news within the Trinity Community, as well as a good way to hear about events, etc.

So we pretty much dropped the ball on reporting most of the Senior Week events (sorry, it’s the first year I’ve remotely paid attention to them…).

Aside from that though, Sunday is the day. With that brings a lot of last minute questions, probably the biggest one for parents (and graduates) alike is WHERE WILL COMMENCEMENT BE IN THE EVENT OF RAIN? Or more importantly, HOW WILL WE KNOW IF THERE IS A LOCATION CHANGE?

For these questions, expect either an update to the Commencement website, or an e-mail to the student body. I’d also advise calling the central switchboard for any pressing questions at 860-297-2000.

Unfortunately it’s raining pretty hard right now (12:30 AM on Sunday), so I’d expect the ceremony to be moved inside – sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

As far as the schedule for Sunday:

The tradition of stepping on The Luther-Roosevelt Long Walk Inscription in front of the Fuller Arch in Northam Towers for the first time on Commencement day continues. Members of the Trinity community, as well as visitors, have generally avoided stepping on the inscription, perhaps instinctively aware that it is connected with some event in the College’s history. The inscription in fact commemorates the visit in June 1918 of former President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt, who delivered an address and received an honorary degree at Commencement.

Last night at 10:00PM Stephen Morgan, the man who allegedly shot and killed Wesleyan junior Johanna Justin-Jinich on Wednesday of this week. Morgan reportedly walked into a Cumberland Farms in Meredin, CT – just 10 miles away from Wesleyan – and asked the clerk to use the phone to call the police. WFSB (Channel 3 News) has an exclusive video showing Morgan in the back of a police car as well as an interview with the clerk who helped Morgan dial the police’s phone number.

Morgan is in custody in Middletown under a $10 million bail and is being arraigned today in Middlesex Superior Court.

This brings an end to much of the suspense and confusion behind the tragic event, allowing the Wesleyan community to being mourning and return to normal life.

Continue to keep the Wesleyan community as well as Johanna’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. I’ll provide more updates regarding memorial services, rememberences, and vigils as they are planned.

Don’t forget to check out Wesleying as they have also been following this story very closely.

If you have not already heard by now, it is my sincere regret to inform you that at 1:00p.m. today in the Wesleyan University Red and Black Cafe, Wesleyan junior Johanna Justin-Jinich was shot several times by an assailant wearing a wig. The gunman is still at large, but is not expected to be on the Wesleyan University campus, and have set up a half mile perimeter around the school with K-9 and Street Unit police patrols.

Johanna Justin-Jinich, the vicitm of today's shooting.

Police say they know the identity of the suspect, although he remains somewhere at large.

Trinity students have seemed shocked and horrified at this incident and are awaiting an address from campus administrators as of the time of this writing. A thread on the ACB has had more than one student asking for a forum or discussion of some type be held here on campus as well, as Wesleyan has close ties to many students here on campus.

Channel 3 news has an ongoing story about the horrific tragedy and provides some clearer details than I can find words to describe. You can also see the official Wesleyan University press release here. It contains kind words and a somber tone written by server administrators at the University, but nothing of too much news substance other than support.

From the article:

Police said Johanna Justin-Jinich was shot multiple times inside the Broad Street Book Store at about 1 p.m. Wednesday. She was taken to Middlesex Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police said the gunman entered the book store wearing a wig and carrying a gun. They said Justin-Jinich worked at the bookstore café.

Please send love and warm wishes to the community of Wesleyan Univesrity – one of our fellow NESCAC schools who is undoubtably hurting more than ever at a time like this.

I honestly had no clue it existed, as I’m sure most of you didn’t either, until I saw a tweet about it from the TCLibrary Twitter account. Still not convinced, today I took a walk over, and what did I find? A water cooler.

From the e-mail sent to the student body:

As of today NO cases of Swine flu have been CONFIRMED in Connecticut, but two “probable” cases have been identified in Stratford and Southbury, along with two other possible cases in East Haddam. According to the Hartford Courant, Gov. M. Jodi Rell said samples from the two probable cases have been sent to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing.

Campus Safety and Martha O’Brien both sent out e-mails regarding updates on the water boil advisory and the current Swine Flu outbreak across the world. As for the boil advisory, we no longer need to boil our water before consuming it (although I must admit I haven’t been following that too well). Campus Safety mentioned that the City will be flushing the water system soon, however, and water may appear cloudy although it’s safe to drink.

Martha O’Brien (head of the Health Center) issued an update regarding Swine Flu today as well. As it stands at this time no cases of Swine Flu have been reported in the state, although some have been seen as close as New York. If you have been to Mexico lately or know anyone who has and are feeling ill, seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
