Review: Ting Ho Chinese Food

without comments

Reviews are something that I’ve been thinking about doing for a while. Food, movies, music, etc. are all up for review, and will hopefully be added on a pretty consistent basis.

Craving Chinese food a couple of nights ago, I decided to go back to a thread I had seen on TrinTalk at the begining of the month titled, “Best Chinese Delivery?” Eager to try a new Chinese delivery place, I chose Ting Ho instead of Peking Garden on the comment that they “used real chicken,” by one Guest.

Real chicken or not, Ting Ho was weak at best all around. The three of us ordered a few different dishes, vegie lo mein, chicken lo mein, pork fried rice, steamed dumplings, sesame chicken, and the customary white rice and egg roll. Finally, after almost an hour of waiting, the food came (still hot, props).

It just wasn’t that good, though. The lo mein was a molded chinese food container clump, you had to pry the noodles apart from one another. The semsame chicken was a weird brown instead of orange tint, and the pork in the pork fried rice kind of glimmered. Not the prettiest food we though, but we decided to trudge along and go for taste instead of presentation. Unfortunately Ting Ho didn’t really impress us there, either. The food tasted sort-of the way it looked, just a little off. Granted, each recipie can’t be the same, it just didn’t taste like your normal, run of the mill Chinese food, not as good.

While I’m not a food critic, I’m going to say that Ting Ho doesn’t get the seal of approval I was hoping to give out. A mediocre 2.5/5 stars.

Last chance to change your meal plan!

without comments

Tomorrow (Thursday, September 18th) is the last day to change your meal plan if you still need to do so. The Charwells office is located on the second floor of Mather (same level as the Washington Room), which is where you have to change your meal plan.

Meal plans are as follows:

  • Mather Traditional $1750
  • 21 Flex $2200
  • Block 300 $2200
  • 19 Flex $2100
  • 14 Flex $1925
  • Block 220 $1925

Block meals carry over from week to week, unlike Flex and the Traditional option, which are locked in. If you have any last minuet questions e-mail the Chartwells office at meal.plans@trincoll.edu and they should be able to help you out.

Waiting for Cyote Jack’s? Don’t hold your breath.

without comments

I had been eagerly awaiting the arrival if Cyote Jack’s since the first time I mentioned it a few weeks ago.

After checking the Chartwells website daily with no updates I asked around and was told last week that today would be the fateful day.

Alas, I’ve been let down again. Unfortunately, according to an unnamed Chartwells worker, they are running into issues with ventalation and the roof above the proposed grill and deep fryers - this pushes the opening date back to the end of the month.

See you in late September or early October Cyote Jack.

Farmers’ Market Today (9/10)

without comments

Don’t miss out on the Farmers’ Market happening today, Wednesday 9/10, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on the Cave Patio.

This is a perfect opportunity to buy fresh, local grown Connecticut produce. The usual suspects such as tomatoes, peppers, squash, fresh herbs, and many other things will be outside the Cave for purchase.

New Food on Campus

without comments

It appears that the speculation and hope has paid off, and Chartwells has decided to listen to some of our students’ cries. That’s right, according to the Chartwells website the Cave will once again have a grill in it. Dubbed “Coyote Jack’s Grill” which will specialize in char-grilled and fried chicken and beef burgers. Chartwells says that it will have a “southwestern flair,” which undoubtably will be a nice change from the rotating pasta/quesedilla bar we used to have.

In addition to the grill being re-instated in the Cave, there appears to also be a new brand of pizza being made down stairs, known as Mama Leone’s. Whether or not there’ll be much of a difference is pretty unclear right now, though. The Bistro added a menu item as well, mini-burgers. While I’m sure many have been aquainted with both Wood-n-Tap and Sidewalk’s takes on the slider concept, we’ll see how the Bistro does as well.

Study shows eating breakfast can help LOSE weight

without comments

According to the recent findings of The United Kingdom’s Dr. Alex Johnstone of the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, eating a breakfast containing up to half of the recommended calories for a whole day, may lead to weight loss.  Dr. Johnstone’s reasoning seems to be fairly sound, and can be summed up in a few points:

  • Eating in the morning reduces cravings for food before lunch
  • Your metabolism is higher during the mid morning
  • Eating a hearty breakfast does not limit how much you can eat like most diets
“It could be that it is simply easier for people on a higher-carbohydrate diet to comply with it over a longer period.”
