Long Walk Renovation in the New York Times
Someone on the ACB posted a link to a very nice article that appeared in Friday’s New York Times. The article outlines the renovations done by the school and quotes Katie Marinello ‘11 and Sophie Starchman ‘11 about their experiences so far living in the newly renovated Jarvis. It’s a great piece and a short read.
Like many colleges on the East Coast, with long histories and traditional buildings that no longer suit the needs of 21st-century students, Trinity College knew it had to modernize some of its student housing and classroom buildings to stay current. So it spent $33 million to renovate three connected brownstone buildings from the early 1870s that make up what is known as “the Long Walk.†The project was funded through long-term debt that will be offset by fund-raising, officials said.

Small Explosion Leaves Custodian Injured
Many of you may have seen firetrucks and other emergancy response crews on campus around 7:00 P.M. last night. As it turns out, one of our custodians walked into a chemistry lab in Clement last night to find a chemical reaction ensuing in the chemical waste containers. It created a small explosion from which he later felt irritation in his eyes, and some difficulty breathing. Spokesperson for Trinity College, Michelle Jackman, said that he was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, but it’s not believed that his injuries are anything serious.

Connecticut College/Wesleyan/Trinity Library System Hacked
The library consortium between Connecticut College, Weselyan University, and Trinity College was apparently hacked into by people looking to either set up chat servers or send spam e-mails. The servers, which are located at the consortium’s hub at Weselyan, contain the names, addresses, social security numbers, and other valuable information of approximately 2,800 ConnColl library patrons, 28 Weselyan library patrons, and three Trinity library patrons. While they say the data wasn’t accessed, they are mailing information to those whose identities could be at risk.
While it isn’t a widespred issue for Trinity, as only 3 names were housed on the server, I still find it somewhat disconcerting that there hasn’t been any attention drawn to this from the administration or the SGA.
The Courant article directs people with questions to see:
Individuals with questions may contact Ruth Seeley, manager of computer support services, at ruth.seeley@conncoll.edu or 860-439-2052.
The Hartford Courant is the publisher that broke the story, and we subsequently picked it up from Weselying.
Charges brought against Trinity-student shooter
The Bristol Press reports that a Bristol, CT man has been charged with the May 5th assault and shooting of a Trinity College student. The male, 27, named Edwin Daniel Vega was caught and arrested on July 13th after police used witness reports in conjunction with surveillance footage from an apartment complex.
Police are still looking for Vega’s accomplice and are asking for help identifying a potential witness. Chances are none of our readers would know her, but here is a website the police are providing. Of course contact HPD if you know anything about the case.Â
I missed hearing about the July 13th arrest, but judging by the charges brought against the fellow he’ll have a fun time ahead of him assuming he’s found guilty.Â
Vega, 27 of Bristol, CT

Want to try out the new Facebook?
Update 2: Eh maybe not, all I ever see is the new Facebook still…who knows, if it works for you leave a comment.Â
Update: Facebook has apparently updated the site to have the new design by default. You should be forwarded to http://new.facebook.com automatically when you visit http://facebook.com
While I know this isn’t exactly “Trinity news” I figured it pertains to most any college student out there, especially Trinity students. There has been a lot of talk recently about the new Facebook and what it will look like, well, guess no more because you can now try out what the new Facebook will look and feel like.
Instead of visiting facebook.com as usual visit http://new.facebook.com instead and it should bring you to the new Facebook, completely functional. It worked for me and for others, although it didn’t work for my friend at Georgetown, so it might not work for everyone.  It’s pretty cool anyways. Here is a picture of the new profile page for those of you that are curious:

Trin Alum looks to TPC River Highlands this weekend
“I love coming here because I went to Trinity, where never in my life did I think back then I’d be on Tour,” said Williamson, making his 12th appearance in Cromwell this week. “It’s always great coming back because of the good friends I have here. And I’ll always be thankful for getting a sponsor’s exemption last year. This is where my career got going again.”
Williamson finished second last year in the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, CT. Williamson, who turned pro in 1990, looks to the weekend to bring about another great finish and hopefully propel his career even further.
Trinity Left Over $2.5 million by Former Professor
I was watching NBC30 tonight and suddenly hear our dear ole Trin in the headlines. Professor Emeritus Albert Gastmann, who passed away last year at 87, has left the majority of his estate to The College. The late Professor directed that his gift be used to:
1) enhance resources for the Political Science Department such as visiting lecturers, field trips and library purchases, 2) fund the Gastmann Initiative in International Organizations and Programs, which will support Trinity’s Rome campus programs, and 3) establish a Trinity scholarship fund that will give preference to students from the Netherlands or the Netherland Antilles.
President James F. Jones, Jr. called the gift “remarkable” and that we all indeed are very grateful for the gift.Â
Yay money! This should indeed help ease some of the funding issues Trin seems to encounter. This gift is by far the largest left by a Faculty or Staff member, and is one that comes as a huge surprise to even those that knew Professor Gastmann closely.Â
